LITTLE MONSTERS (1989) ~ 10/10*s ~ the expression gets used a lot, but this really IS underrated

LITTLE MONSTERS1989starring: Howie Mandel, Fred Savage, Daniel Stern, Frank Whalley, Rick Ducommondirected by: Richard A. Greenberg

LITTLE MONSTERS is, quite literally, one of the most underrated films of all time, of any genre - that may sound ridiculous, but I mean it; this isn't just any old disposable children's picture, although i'm sure any kid would love it, as I did when i was younger .. first off, it gets said a lot, but this film really can be enjoyed by adults just as much as children - there is real drama and horror here, and just not much cheese; the movie is genuinely funny, too - Rick Duccomon's performance, for instance, is as hilarious as it is genuinely frightening .. also, one thing that makes this film so good and addictive is that it is really really well-shot - it almost truly feels like, albeit in a broad way, an expressionistic Lang or Murnau classic of the nineteen-twenties and nineteen-thirties - I do say this with a pinch of salt, of course, but the film's psychedelic, spooky, highly-detailed cinematography is close to perfection for me; the atmosphere is just downright beautiful with its trippyness .. also, the primary starring cast is odd but excellent, even though there are a few typical bad child-performances - Fred Savage is great though, he really is .. ... basically, everything is really just spot-on here: the cast, the cinematography, the atmosphere and tone: all executed with excellence; this truly is one of the most underrated movies of all time - it is, of course, quite dark at times, and I think that some parents over the years have maybe been offended by this picture,,, but who cares, lol, it IS PG, after all; there IS a lot of 'odd subtext' and 'things in between the lines', so to speak, but this just adds to its brilliance as a film that appeals to adults as much as kids - maybe this is one of the reasons WHY it is so downright genius and appealing year after year: because there IS a lot going on , that's for sure.

PS - the soundtrack is practically genius, and practically impossible to find, too .. and impossible to ever forget.

10*s out of 10

The 80s were perfect

This movie is a blend of all great things 80s! And not your normal molly ringwald classics. Fred savage, ben savage, monsters, 80s makeup fx, 80s synth pop. Creative story line and the precursor to monsters ink! You'll love everything about this movie if you like the feeling of a simpler time. Do yourself a favor and watch! Happy halloween!

Still one of my favorites

This was a film, that I watched a lot as a kid, and was one of my favorites. I still enjoy this movie as an adult, years later. I see a lot of people was the rating is off, but keep in mind, when this movie was rated, things were very different. There are tons of movies from that time period, that you go back, and watch, that had very questionable material for the rating. I don't feel that what is in the movie is terrible, and can see much worse on regular TV today, honestly. I would recommend this movie to people who were fans of Beetlejuice, Labrynth, Big, and similar classics. It was definitely an underrated hidden gem, as long as you don't take it too serious.
