Comedian Bill Maher's Tony Award-nominated Broadway standup show, Bill Maher: Victory Begins at Home, will return to New York, July 17-19, 2003. The final performance at the Hudson Theatre (which is not technically a Broadway house though it's in the midtown theatre district) will be filmed live for HBO. In the show, Maher addresses contemporary political, social and cultural topics -- Iraq, President Bush and the so called Axis of Evil. The opinionated Maher said about Victory Begins at Home: "We've heard everything about the War on Terrorism except what we can actually do to help win it. The government used to do that for us through propaganda (the positive kind) posters, so taking my cue from the great old posters of World War I and World War II ('Loose Lips Sink Ships,' 'Buy War Bonds,' 'Plant a Victory Garden,' etc.) I commissioned artists to paint the posters our government today should be putting out to help us win this war." —[email protected]

Henri Danglard, proprietor of the fashionable (but bankrupt) cafe 'Le Paravent Chinois' featuring his mistress, belly dancer Lola, goes slumming in Montmarte (circa 1890) where the then-old-fashioned cancan is still danced. There, he conceives the idea of reviving the cancan as the feature of a new, more popular establishment...and meets Nini, a laundress and natural dancer, whom he hopes to star in his new show. But a tangled maze of jealousies intervenes... —Rod Crawford

A man and a woman are passionately in love with each other, but their attempts to consummate that passion are constantly thwarted by their families, the Church, and bourgeois society. —Michael Brooke

Reviews

Brilliantly Strange

This film is so wonderfully different to most films, its subtly strong storyline and brilliant acting from both Jeff Daniels and Emma Stone was captivating. I watched this film without seeing any reviews or even the plot, and it was so unexpected, but in the midst of all the films being released this film is unique, as it has its own sort of genre (although unknown)which can be good or bad, in my opinion it is good, although some viewers may disagree as I said before it is strange, so some may find discomfort in this, but this is necessary to convey the compelling (in some sense) and also emotional story.

In a nutshell, this film is strange, but also colourful, unexpected, and enjoyable to watch

Best film in ages

Just finished watching this and it was fantastic. I'd never heard of it till I saw it, but with such as good cast (Jeff Daniels, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, Lisa Kudrow) thought it had to be worth watching. I absolutely agree with the great review already on here. Should of had a better release. It's not the usual kind of film, all action, special effects, non-story driven drama, or one liner comedy, thats always playing at your cinema regardless of what date it is, just a very REAL movie about people and how things don't have to be movie style extraordinary for our lives to change for the better and everything's perfect by end, life's never perfect but we can change for the better. Very moving by the end, really well written and acted. Not the story you think its going to be, very profound. Must see.

Courageous Acting & Portrayal of Odd Concept

The concept of this movie on the surface may seem a bit odd or maybe even a bit dorky in the beginning; however, the emotion of the characters; especially Abby played by Emma Stone, really help bring the story to life. As the story wraps up the characters' different stories, each story is portrayed in a clever way. I would have to say the movie tries a little too hard at times to be shocking which makes it a little harder to take serious for a movie of this style and caliber. Overall I felt the movie was a good very watch able movie and I give it a 8 for the courage of the acting and portrayal which raised this movie above average.
