Movie Description:
Roseanne McNulty must vacate the soon-to-be demolished mental institution in Roscommon, Ireland that she's called home for over 50 years. The hospital's psychiatrist, Dr. William Grene, is called in to assess her condition. He finds himself intrigued by Roseanne's seemingly inscrutable rituals and tics, and her fierce attachment to her Bible, which she has over the decades transformed into a palimpsest of scripture, drawings, and cryptic diary entries. As Grene delves deeper into Roseanne's past, we see her as a young woman, whose charisma proves seductive. We learn that she moved to Sligo to work in her aunt's café, fell in love with a dashing fighter pilot, and that a local priest fell tragically in love with her.

A masterpiece of all that is wrong with the human psyche

This is one of those rare films that engages and tests your emotions. Superbly directed and flawlessly acted by one and all, this film will provoke a myriad of emotions from anger, sadness and outrage to tenderness, warmth and love and I hope for many, tears at it's conclusion. It depicts a lot of what is wrong with the human psyche and the vileness of the Catholic Church, but it also evokes hope and peace from a life of pain.

Redgrave And Mara's Performances Is Enough Reason To Watch This Film

Vanessa Redgrave and Rooney Mara together with Eric Bana,Theo James and Jack Reynor star in this film known as "The Secret Scripture". This movie directed by Jim Sheridan is an adaptation from the book of the same title by Sebastian Barry.

Rose McNulty has been a resident of a mental institution for 40 years. A doctor talks to him to decide whether she would be transferred to the new mental institution where all the patients have been relocated or she would be sent home instead. The old Rose - portrayed by Redgrave - is obviously getting addled due to old age.As she tells her story, there are flashbacks happening with her life as a young Rose - portrayed by Mara - during World War II.

This was a good movie despite the fact that it was predictable.Added to that, the viewer is provided the theme of hope particularly in Rose's case. The viewer also gets to learn about Irish history. Finally,we also get to see great performances from both Redgrave and Mara. That alone is enough to see this film

Abusing (power)

One of the things I reckon a lot of people fear, is being detained in a mental hospital. While I do think that things probably have improved over the years (dear God let that be true) in those facilities, it still wouldn't be something anyone would look forward to.

The acting is really good, the story engaging and the tension is high. You may feel squeamish at times and sickened, but that is what the movie wants you to feel. Not an easy watch then, but if you can watch it, you will find something that is worth your time and really engaging.
