Not my usual watch but I had long been a fan of Scott K Andrews' novels, from which School's Out Forever was adapted and keen to see what all the fuss was about following the Guardian's glowing review. Certainly agree with the comments about it being something of a love child between Lord of the Flies and Shaun of the Dead. Thought another reviewer's Citizen Cane comparison was far fetched to say the least though..

On the whole, a thoroughly enjoyable watch. I thought it did a good job of drawing on themes of mob mentality and male dominance - at times making for difficult viewing but a quick Google will tell you this film isn't aimed at kids.

Surprised to see that some have diminished the action scenes - this film does not offer itself up as a next instalment in a Marvel series. Stick to Chris Hemsworth films if you're after something super high octane. What it does offer though is a decent, well-shot, well-scripted romp which we found to be perfectly enjoyable for yet another Saturday night in lockdown.

Also interesting to read from other reviews that the film was shot pre-Covid. The comparisons are at some points uncanny!

This film calls back to many British cult classics. Shaun of the Dead, 28 Days Later and Lord of the Flies come together in a whirl wind of action, humour, gore, with a dark take on 'survival of the fittest' running through it. It's refreshing to see a writer and director making such genre-bending and bold choices, and not shying away from the bleaker moments. It's a rollercoaster ride and I loved it.

Can't really understand the hate for this movie, it's an okay watch, completely unbelievable, but that's why its called fiction. Fine to pass the time.
